Chick Fil-A Shakes Up Breakfast – a Trend to Follow? (Watch)

Chick-Fil-A is adding to its breakfast menu for the first time since 2010. The latest addition to the fast food chain’s menu is called the Egg White Grill. It’s made with grilled chicken, egg whites, American cheese and an English muffin.

If it sounds a little like a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin, that’s because it includes some of the same basic elements.

However, Chick Fil-A isn’t being a straight up copycat.  The restaurant chain adapted it to its own signature protein which is chicken. And they turned it healthier, using just the white of eggs and skinless chicken. No sausage here.

Healthy Fast Food Breakfast Trends

The company’s research found that breakfast has grown across the fast food industry by 60 percent in the last five years. So it makes sense that they’d want to add more options to the menu.

Even if the new Egg White Grill doesn’t become the restaurant’s biggest seller, it still offers another option for a growing sector of the fast food industry.

And more and more consumers are focusing on finding healthier options, even when it comes to fast food. So an option with egg whites and grilled chicken can provide a unique alternative to all the fried chicken and biscuits normally found on the menu.

For other businesses, especially restaurants, Chick-Fil-A’s updated breakfast menu demonstrates the importance of staying on top of changing trends.

If your industry is experiencing changes like the increasing popularity of breakfast or healthy items, that’s something worth exploring. It’s even more interesting when you can combine two trends (breakfast fast good and healthy), like Chick Fil-A did.

Chick-Fil-A commissioned its own research to find out if expanding its breakfast menu was worth it. While you needn’t go to this expense, you can certainly mine your own data or ask your staff what they are seeing.

For example, what are your top sellers?  What are customers asking for? What is selling the least?

You can also check out your competitors. What products are they advertising the most?

And finally, simply observe modern culture. Which restaurants are packed? Which ones do your neighbors rave about?

Are there trends or changes you’ve seen in your industry, no matter how small, that may signal it’s time for you to make a change in your products and services?
