ways to market yourself

I admit it. I’m a media junkie and a marketing warrior. There I said it. I have loved everything about media and marketing from my early entertainment days and broadcast radio career and now my social media consultancy launched in 2007.

Some traditional, social and new media, and content marketing tools we have today to market and promote, that are either free or won’t bust your budget are astounding. Aren’t they?

The best marketing toolbox is always a combination of the tried and true and new best practices including:

  • A clearly defined brand that makes you visually stand out, tells people what you do and what you stand for.
  • Branded business materials that deliver your promise.
  • An engaging website, blog, or branded LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter page that showcases your mission, vision, value, products, services and spirit.
  • An integrated marketing and social media formula that you use to educate, engage, interact and serve.

I begin here because ultimately nothing beats or is more important than meeting people in person. Email and online communication is not a substitute for meeting in person. It’s a bridge. Use the email and online tools to make connections and grow connections but take the initiative to pick up the phone or get together. Nothing accelerates a relationship more.

  1. I think that out of the list, the most effective is in-person networking. Nothing beats meeting the person and interacting with that person one-on-one to be able to truly get to know them.

    • Aira, that is still where the magic will happen, but if people are not in proximity online is amazing.

  2. Thank you for such a clearly written list !

  3. Robert M. Donnelly

All great points. Another inexpensive way to get started building your own personal brand is to get: Personal Brand Planning for life, available as an E book on Amazon. It may be the best investment of less then $10.00 you will ever make.

  4. Hi Deborah,
With your experience can you tell me which top 5 would be the best for a new health&life insurance agent to focus on learning and implementing?

  5. Deborah,

I like point #10. I look forward to our future podcast conversation… 🙂

  6. We have used a lot of the list but the most affective for us has been Youtube and Phone Calls and Skype Group Discussions. 116 Subscribers to our lists from a couple of videos and one personalized capture page. Success will be in the follow-up and relationship development, not in trying to sell a product or service. Getting to know know people, becoming good friends, and finding out what their needs, wants and don’t wants are is what we are looking for.

  7. Hi deborah,

You have listed all the amazing points here and the best thing is all are free or low cost. Few points are new for me but it seems good and now thinking to try it. Thanks for this list.

  8. Hi Deborah,

Thanks for listing the 10 points. I felt encouraged and empowered by the way you wrote them.

    Cheers!

  9. This is really helpful and very informative.

    Hey Deborah,
That’s a nice list, I’ve tried a few myself, with no success.
Anyways, what would you suggest to a singer? How do you think a singer should go about marketing themselves?

  11. Typo! “Singing” in a mall or public place.

    • I love the idea, Brenda. I play guitar…I may just give it a try. Check out my YouTube music video “Lonesome George Stanton”

  12. Thinking out of the box is the crucial way in any business, even if you are an experienced person or a newbie or else you have struggled to reach your goals. You think we have missed anything in the list then do let us know what you think about it.

  13. Hi Deborah!

Thank you for this amazing list. I love #14,! Very often, we forget how we can integrate traditional and digital methods in our businesses!

  14. We’ve been working on press releases with everything else we have going on. Any specific tips for that? Thank you so much!

  15. Nice informative article with good insights. Thanks for posting.
